About biggerplate

What is biggerplate?

Biggerplate is a sharing and exchange facility for people who use MindManager visual mapping software. The site allows you to quickly and easily share maps that you have created, and also enables you to download maps created by others. Joining biggerplate is free, and all you need to make use of this site is MindManager installed on your computer, and a biggerplate username and password.

Biggerplate history

Biggerplate started as a part-time project being pursued on the side of full-time university studying. A group of handsome students discovered that using visual mapping, and subsequently MindManager, had a very positive impact on their studying for exams and also helped with researching and writing better essays and dissertations.

Having experienced the positive impact of this way of working and learning, the team decided to work together to create an online resource where students could access and share academic content in MindManager map format. The idea was pursued on a part-time basis whilst at university, with a pilot test at St. Edwards School in Oxford (UK). A series of presentations, teacher training and pupil training workshops were delivered by the biggerplate team.

After graduating from university in 2007 the team moved their full attention to biggerplate and started to plan biggerplate.com. During the design process, it became clear that the website could also prove useful for people using MindManager in business and other fields, not just education. The objective then became to create the only dedicated MindManager map resource for schools, universities, business and life in general!

Now that this site is live, we hope you will take the time to browse (and download) the maps uploaded by other users, and perhaps upload some of your own maps onto the site for other members to see. There are many more features to come on the site over the next few months, so stick around - things are just getting interesting...

We'd love to know what you think of biggerplate.com. If you've got a minute, why not drop us a line...?

How the map ratings work

To help you find maps that are not only relevant but also useful, Biggerplate have created a ratings system which enables members to rate the maps they have downloaded. Here's how it works:

Not yet rated Not yet rated
Half a star rating ½ a star
1 star rating 1 star
1½ star rating 1 ½ stars
2 star rating 2 stars
2½ star rating 2 ½ stars
3 star rating 3 stars
3½ star rating 3 ½ stars
4 star rating 4 stars
4½ star rating 4 ½ stars
5 stars
5 star gold rating 5 star gold

Mind maps on Biggerplate can only be rated by members who have previously downloaded them. Map rating works on a five star system. The calculation for the rating uses the total score for a map based on rating of 1 to 5 stars (with each star worth 2 points), divided by the total number of votes:

Total map rating / total ratings = average rating
For example:
742 / 237 = 3.13
is rounded to become 3 which becomes:
1½ star rating

When a map has been rated by just a small number of members, the star rating may be biased. When viewing a map, the total number of votes can be seen by hovering over the star rating.

In addition to the 5 star rating, there is a 5 star gold rating. Any map with a 5 star gold rating will have an average score of 9.5 or higher and with more than 10 votes.
