Historically, the Celtic languages were mostly found on the British Isles. The subbranch of the Celtic family spoken here is called Insular Celtic. It includes Irish or Goidelic (Old Irish and its descendants) and Brittonic (Welsh, Breton and Cornish). However, other Celtic languages were once spoken throughout Central Europe and even in Anatolia. The continental Celtic languages of which texts have been preserved - Gaulish, Lepontic and Celtiberian - died out in the first centuries BCE and have been attested very sparsely.
